St. Gregorios College of Social Science is imparting post graduate degree in Master of Social Work (MSW) from 2005. The college is affiliated to MG University Kottayam. The college name commemorates our founding father’s name SAINT PARUMALA KOCHUTHIRUMENI with an intention to raise the cultural standard of the community by educating its people. The college is owned and run by St. Gregorios Medical Mission Hospital, Parumala. H.G. Dr. Yuhanon Mar Chrysostomos is the Patron of our college.
The department of Social Work is offering Medical & Psychiatric Specialization and expecting to start few more disciplines in the future. The first batch had 4 faculty members and 8 budding social workers who have successfully entered into the profession. Many of our graduates have secured well positions in various establishments in India and foreign countries. The department at present is having its 11th batch with 20 efficient students. The two year full time Post Graduate course in Social Work concentrates on professional training leading to Managerial and Organizational competences in Medical and Psychiatric social work. The students are trained to plan and execute an extensive range of social services, social welfare activities, and work in hospital and other industrial establishments and training institutions.
The curriculum has three important components - Theory, Field Work and Research. It enables the students to acquire necessary knowledge of sociology, psychology, philosophy and methods of social work, Community Health and Mental health, and practical experience in scientific social research. To facilitate the above complex learning process, the training programme also includes independent study, lectures, seminars, observation visits, rural exposure camp, study tour, concurrent and block field work training. The department considers education as a mean for social change and transformation with societal commitment.

We believe that learning by doing is extremely crucial aspect of teaching-learning. The methods of training are therefore, participatory in nature and learner-centered. Our teaching methods involve classroom teaching, field work experience, orientation visits, group discussions, case studies, role plays and self learning assignments.
The department of social work is having a well sophisticated library with subject related books, and journals. It covers the important areas of social science and social research. It provides all information to conduct research and other projects for the students.
The department has well latest PCs for students. The department has its own computer with internet facility.
The department has a placement cell for its final year students to facilitate identification of job opportunities and absorption of the students into suitable jobs.
The department has a forum which seeks to promote educational, social, and professional interests of the students’ activities like debate, games, cultural programs etc., are organized. Rs. 50 is collected as a membership fee from every student. The students also raise funds for the various programs since fundraising is a skill for professional social work.
The department organizes its annual seminar in the month of March under the auspicious of Grasp and the theme of the seminar is related to the trend and practices of Social Work.
Camp and Study tour
Rural Exposure Camp and Study Tour are organized to have various experiences and focused knowledge about various social issues and organizational function. This year the students conducted the camp at Attapady and visited four villages to realize the issues of the village people.
The annual day of the department is celebrated in the month of August every year. At present the department of Social work is functioning very efficiently and dynamically with 4 faculty members and 40 energetic and vibrant students to fulfill the objectives of Social work profession in a very systematic way.
